Systematic issues of power electronic equipment access

The traditional power system and its analysis theory are based on the assumption that all power sources are synchronous generators, which means that our analysis and control methods are formulated based on how the magnetic field of the coil changes when the generator speed decreases/increases.

But as a power source, new energy relies on a large number of power electronic devices for power generation, such as doubly fed asynchronous wind turbines and permanent magnet direct drive wind turbines, which all contain power electronic components. Photovoltaic inverters are pure power electronic devices. When these devices become the main current, the analytical theory based on concepts such as "generator rotor moment of inertia" and "coil magnetic flux permeability" will no longer be applicable, and previous control methods will be difficult to apply to such new power systems.

For example, as we mentioned earlier, a generator has a huge rotor that stores a large amount of kinetic energy during normal rotation, known as "inertia". When the power is insufficient, the generator speed decreases, but the lost kinetic energy will be converted into electrical energy to continue supplying power, which buys time for regulation. However, new energy sources like photovoltaics do not have a "rotor", let alone the so-called "inertia". Therefore, the original regulation method will no longer be applicable, which makes the power system with a high proportion of new energy extremely fragile.
